How to Spot a Phone Scam Before It Costs You

June 15, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology

Why scammers target the phone

A phone call feels personal and urgent — and that's exactly what a scammer is counting on. They want to catch you off guard and rush you before you have time to think it through. The good news: once you know the warning signs, scams are surprisingly easy to spot.

Five signs it's a scam

  1. They create urgency. "Act now or your account will be closed today." Real companies give you time to think.
  2. They ask for unusual payment. Gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency are scammer favorites. No legitimate business asks to be paid this way.
  3. They open with something scary. A warning that your computer is infected, or that your Social Security number has been "suspended."
  4. They want remote access or a password. Never let an unexpected caller onto your computer or into your accounts.
  5. The caller ID looks official. Scammers can fake any number — even one that looks local or like a government office.

What to do instead

  • Hang up. You never owe a stranger your time. It is not rude to hang up on a scammer.
  • Don't trust the number they gave you. Look up the real company's number yourself, and call that.
  • Talk to someone you trust before sending money or sharing any information.
