How to Turn On Live Voicemail on Your iPhone

November 8, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology

Your phone rings, and the number on the screen isn't anyone you recognize. Is it your doctor's office? A scam caller? A grandchild calling from a friend's phone? Most of us either answer out of worry we'll miss something important, or let it ring and wonder for the rest of the day who it was.

Your iPhone has a feature built for exactly this moment. It's called Live Voicemail, and it shows you, in writing, what a caller is saying while they're still leaving the message — before you decide whether to pick up. You don't have to guess anymore.

This article explains what Live Voicemail does, how to make sure it's turned on, and how to use it the next time an unfamiliar number calls.

What Live Voicemail Does on Your iPhone

Normally, when you don't answer a call, it just goes to voicemail, and you find out who called (and why) only after you listen to the message later. Live Voicemail changes that. When someone calls and you don't pick up right away, your screen shows the words of their message as they speak them, almost like captions. You can read what they're saying in real time, and if it turns out to be someone you want to talk to, you can tap the screen to answer the call while they're still talking.

This works whether the caller is a real person or an automated system, which makes it especially useful for sorting out calls you're unsure about without having to say a word yourself first.

How to Check Live Voicemail Is Turned On

This feature comes turned on automatically on most iPhones that can run it, but it's worth confirming.

  1. Open the Settings app (the gray icon with gears).
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap Phone.
  4. Tap Live Voicemail.
  5. Make sure the switch next to it is green, which means it's on.

If you don't see "Live Voicemail" listed under Phone settings, your iPhone may be a few years old, or it may need a software update. We cover how to check for and install updates in an earlier post, which is worth a look first.

How to Use It When a Call Comes In

Once it's on, you don't have to do anything extra to start using it. The next time you don't answer a call right away:

  1. Your screen will show that the caller is leaving a Live Voicemail.
  2. As they talk, their words appear as text on your screen, a few seconds behind what they're actually saying.
  3. If you read enough to know you want to talk to them, tap Answer at any point, and you'll be connected right away — the call doesn't have to finish going to voicemail first.
  4. If you'd rather not answer, you can simply let it finish. The message is saved as a regular voicemail you can listen to later.

There's no pressure to decide quickly. You can read the whole message at your own pace before choosing.

Live Voicemail Helps You Decide — It Doesn't Block Scam Calls

It's worth being clear about what this feature is and isn't. Live Voicemail doesn't stop scam calls from coming in, and it doesn't identify who is or isn't trustworthy. What it does is give you something to read before you decide whether to engage at all, which takes away a lot of the pressure of a ringing phone.

If you read a Live Voicemail that mentions a problem with an account, a package, a warrant, or a prize, treat it the same way you would any other suspicious call or message: don't call the number back, and don't provide personal information. If you're ever unsure whether something you've already responded to was a scam, we can help you sort it out and clean things up.

What to Do If You're Stuck

If Live Voicemail doesn't appear in your Settings, or it isn't showing text the way it's supposed to, a couple of things can cause that:

  • Your iPhone's software may need updating for the feature to be available.
  • If your phone service has call forwarding turned on through your carrier, Live Voicemail may not work as expected, and your carrier can help sort that out.
  • The feature may not yet be available in every country, so your iPhone's region setting matters too.

If you'd rather have someone sit with you and check your settings in person, or walk you through it over the phone, that's something we're glad to help with.

Common Questions

Does Live Voicemail cost anything extra?

No. It's a built-in iPhone feature, not a separate purchase or subscription.

Can the caller tell I'm reading their message instead of answering?

No. From the caller's side, it looks and sounds like a normal call going to voicemail.

Does this work for every call I miss?

It works for calls that go to voicemail. If your iPhone is in Airplane Mode, has no signal, or is turned off, calls won't be able to reach you at all, with or without this feature turned on.
