How to Zoom In on a Photo on Your iPhone to See the Details

July 6, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology

When you want a closer look

Remember holding a photograph up close to your eyes, squinting to make out a face in the background? Maybe it was a group shot from a family reunion, and you were trying to spot your cousin in the back row.

Your iPhone can do something better than squinting. It can stretch the photo bigger, right on the screen, so you can see every detail — the writing on a sign, the expression on a grandchild's face, the name on a trophy.

The pinch — the one gesture to learn

The whole trick is a small motion called a "pinch." It uses two fingers, and it works the opposite of pinching salt into a pot.

Here's how it goes:

  1. Open the Photos app (the icon with the colorful pinwheel flower).
  2. Tap the photo you want to look at closely. It will fill the screen.
  3. Place your thumb and pointer finger on the screen, close together, right on the part of the photo you want to see bigger.
  4. Slowly spread those two fingers apart, like you're stretching a rubber band.

The photo grows. Keep spreading your fingers to make it even bigger. You can lift your fingers and do it again to zoom in further.

Moving around and coming back out

Once the photo is zoomed in, you'll only see part of it — like looking at a map through a magnifying glass. To see a different part, put one finger on the screen and drag. The photo slides around underneath your finger.

To shrink the photo back down, do the pinch in reverse. Place two fingers apart on the screen, then bring them together, like pinching a pinch of salt. The photo gets smaller with each pinch.

If you want to return the photo to its normal size in one step, just tap Done in the top corner, then tap the photo again. It will be back to how it started.

A quick example

Say your granddaughter sent you a picture of her new puppy sitting on the porch. You can see the puppy, but there's a little tag on its collar you can't quite read.

Open the photo. Place two fingers right on the collar. Spread them apart. The collar grows until the little tag is big and clear — and you can read "Biscuit" engraved right on it.

That's the whole thing. One gesture, and suddenly every photo on your phone has a magnifying glass built right in.

Try it today

Open your Photos app and find a picture with something small in it — a face in a crowd, a street sign, a caption on a birthday card. Practice the pinch a few times. Spread to zoom in, pinch to zoom out.

Once your fingers get the feel of it, you'll use it every day without thinking about it.
