How to Use the Flashlight on Your iPhone
June 19, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology
Remember the little flashlight that lived in the kitchen drawer? The one with batteries that always seemed to be dead when you needed it most? Your iPhone has a flashlight built right in — bright, reliable, and always with you. It's handy for finding your keys at the bottom of your purse, reading a menu in a dim restaurant, or walking from the car to the front door after dark.
Here's how to turn it on.
The Quickest Way: From the Lock Screen
You don't even need to unlock your phone to use the flashlight. This is the fastest way, and the one most people use.
- Pick up your iPhone and press the side button once so the screen lights up. You'll see the time and the date.
- Look at the bottom-left corner of the screen. You'll see a small flashlight icon — it looks like a little circle inside a shape that resembles a flashlight head.
- Press and hold that icon for about a second. You'll feel a small buzz, and the light on the back of your phone will turn on.
To turn it off, press and hold the same icon again. The light goes out.
If your iPhone is a few years older, you may need to tap the icon rather than press and hold. Try both — whichever works is the right one for your phone.
Another Way: The Control Center
There's a second spot where the flashlight lives, called the Control Center. Think of it like the dashboard of your car — a single place with quick switches for the things you use most.
To open it:
- On newer iPhones (without a Home button): Swipe your finger down from the top-right corner of the screen.
- On older iPhones (with a round Home button at the bottom): Swipe up from the very bottom of the screen.
You'll see a panel of icons. The flashlight icon is usually in the bottom-left area. Tap it once to turn the light on. Tap it again to turn it off.
Making the Light Brighter or Dimmer
Here's something many people don't know: you can adjust how bright the flashlight is. A softer light is gentler on the eyes if you're reading in bed and don't want to wake your spouse.
Open the Control Center the same way as above. Then press and hold your finger on the flashlight icon — don't just tap it, press and hold. A larger panel will appear with a sliding bar. Slide your finger up to make the light brighter, or down to make it dimmer. When you're happy, tap somewhere else on the screen to close it.
A Small Word of Caution
The flashlight uses your phone's battery, just like the old kitchen flashlight used its batteries. If you leave it on by accident, it will drain your battery faster than usual. So when you're done, take a moment to turn it off.
Also, the flashlight and the camera share the same little bulb on the back of your phone. If you try to use the flashlight while your camera is open, it may not work. Close the camera first.
Try It Tonight
Before you go to bed, give it a try. Pick up your iPhone, press the side button, and find that little flashlight icon in the bottom-left corner. Hold it down and watch the light come on. Once you've done it once, you'll have it for good — and you'll never fumble in a dark hallway again.
