How to Turn On the Flashlight on Your iPhone Without Unlocking It

The keychain flashlight, reinvented

Remember those little flashlights that hung on a keyring — the kind you'd click on to find the keyhole at night? Your iPhone has one built right in, and it's brighter than most of those ever were.

The best part: you don't need to unlock the phone, open an app, or fumble with your reading glasses to find it. Two taps and you have light.

Turning it on from the lock screen

The "lock screen" is what you see when you first press the side button — the screen with the time and the date, before you've done anything to open the phone up.

Look at the bottom-left corner of that screen. You'll see a small circle with a picture of a flashlight inside it.

Here's what to do:

Press the side button once to wake the phone. The lock screen appears.
Find the flashlight circle in the bottom-left corner.
Press and hold your finger on it for about one second — just a quick tap won't do it.
You'll feel a small buzz, and the light on the back of the phone turns on.

That firm press is on purpose. Apple made it that way so the flashlight doesn't turn on by accident while the phone is rattling around in your pocket or purse.

Turning it back off

Same steps, in reverse. Wake the phone so the lock screen shows, press and hold the flashlight circle again, and the light goes out. You'll feel the same little buzz to confirm.

If you forget and walk away, don't worry — the light will drain the battery a bit, but it won't hurt the phone.

When this comes in handy

Think about the moments when you'd normally reach for a flashlight:

Finding the lock on the front door after dark
Reading the fine print on a pill bottle in dim light
Looking under the bed for a dropped earring
Walking down a hallway at night without flipping on the overhead light
Checking the fuse box during a power outage

The iPhone flashlight is genuinely bright — bright enough to light up a whole room in a pinch. It uses the same little bulb that lights up your photos when you take a picture in the dark.

A note about the newer iPhones

If your iPhone has a small oval cutout at the top of the screen (rather than a notch), your lock screen may show the flashlight button as a small square instead of a circle. It works the same way — press and hold for about a second.

If you don't see a flashlight button at all on your lock screen, your iPhone may be an older model. In that case, unlock the phone, then swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. You'll see a panel of shortcuts, and the flashlight is one of them — just tap it once.

Try it tonight

Before bed, pick up your iPhone, press the side button so the lock screen appears, and practice pressing and holding that flashlight circle until the light comes on. Then do it again to turn it off.

Once you've done it twice, your fingers will remember. The next time you're standing at a dark front door with an armful of groceries, you'll have light in about two seconds.
