How to Turn On the Flashlight on Your iPhone Without Fumbling in the Dark
September 19, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology
Remember keeping a flashlight in the kitchen drawer, right next to the batteries that may or may not still work? When the power went out, you'd feel around for it in the dark, praying it hadn't rolled to the back.
Your iPhone has a flashlight built right in. It's bright, it's always charged (as long as your phone is), and you can turn it on in about one second — once you know where to tap.
Where the flashlight lives
The flashlight isn't an app you open. It lives in a hidden panel called Control Center — think of it as a little dashboard of shortcuts, tucked just off the edge of your screen.
To open Control Center on most modern iPhones (any iPhone without a round Home button at the bottom):
- Put your finger at the very top-right corner of the screen, right near the battery icon.
- Swipe down from there, about an inch.
A panel will slide into view with a handful of square buttons. One of them shows a small flashlight icon.
If your iPhone has a round Home button at the bottom, it's the opposite: swipe up from the very bottom edge of the screen instead.
Turning it on and off
Once Control Center is open, tap the flashlight icon once. The light on the back of your phone — right next to the camera lens — will switch on. It's surprisingly bright, so try not to shine it in your own eyes.
To turn it off, open Control Center the same way and tap the flashlight icon again. That's it. No sliding switches, no dead batteries.
When you're done, you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or press the Home button) to close Control Center and go back to whatever you were doing.
An even faster way — from the lock screen
Here's the trick worth remembering: you don't even need to unlock your phone.
Wake the screen by tapping it or lifting the phone. You'll see the time, and in the bottom-left corner, a small flashlight icon. Press and hold it firmly for about a second. You'll feel a little tap, and the flashlight comes on.
To turn it off, press and hold the same icon again. This is the fastest way when you've dropped something behind the nightstand or you're walking to the mailbox after dark.
Making the light brighter or dimmer
You can also adjust how bright the beam is — handy if you just need a soft glow to find your slippers without waking your spouse.
Open Control Center as before. This time, instead of tapping the flashlight icon, press and hold it. A vertical bar will appear on the screen. Slide your finger up to make the light brighter, or down to make it dimmer. Tap anywhere else on the screen when you're done.
Try it today
Before bed tonight, give it a practice run in a well-lit room, so your fingers know where to go. Open Control Center, tap the flashlight, tap it again to turn it off. Do it two or three times.
Then, the next time you hear a strange noise at 2 a.m. or drop an earring on the carpet, your phone will be ready — no drawer-fumbling required.
