How to Turn Off the Clicking Sound When You Type on Your iPhone

Remember the sound of a typewriter? That satisfying clack-clack-clack as each key struck the page. There was a time when nobody minded the noise — it meant work was getting done.

Your iPhone makes little clicking sounds when you type, too. Apple thought people might miss the feel of a real keyboard, so they added tiny clicks to each letter. But in a quiet living room, or a doctor's waiting room, or beside a sleeping spouse, those clicks can be more nuisance than comfort. The good news: you can shut them off in about thirty seconds.

Finding the Right Setting

Start on your home screen — the screen with all your app squares on it. Look for the app called Settings. Its icon is a gray circle with what looks like little gears inside. Give it one tap.

Once Settings opens, you'll see a long list. Slide your finger up the screen to scroll down until you find Sounds & Haptics. It has a pink or red icon with a speaker on it. Tap that.

Turning Off the Click

Now you're on a page with several settings for sounds. Scroll all the way to the bottom. Near the end, you'll see a line that says Keyboard Feedback. Tap it.

On the next screen, you'll see a switch labeled Sound. If the switch is green, the clicking is turned on. Tap the switch once, and it will slide over and turn gray. That's it — the clicks are off.

You may also see a switch called Haptic on that same screen. That one controls a gentle tapping feeling in your fingers as you type. You can leave it alone, or turn it off too, whichever you prefer.

Testing It Out

Press the round button at the bottom of your phone, or swipe up from the bottom edge, to get back to your home screen. Open Messages or Notes and tap on a blank spot to bring up the keyboard. Type a few letters.

Silence. No more clicks. You can type a text message during the evening news without your phone chirping along like a chorus of crickets.

If You Change Your Mind

Some folks miss the clicks after a day or two — they liked knowing their tap registered. If that's you, just walk back through the same path: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Keyboard Feedback, and tap the Sound switch again to turn it green. Everything goes right back to the way it was.

One small thing worth trying today: open Settings and take that quick trip to Sounds & Haptics. Even if you decide to leave the clicks on, you'll know where the switch lives — and that's a handy piece of knowledge to have in your back pocket.
