How to Turn Off the Beeping Sound Your iPhone Makes When You Type
June 25, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology
Do you remember the satisfying clack of a typewriter? Each key struck the paper with a sound that meant something — work was getting done. Your iPhone tries to imitate that feeling with a little click every time you tap a letter on the screen.
For some folks, that clicking is comforting. For others, it's a small annoyance — especially in a quiet church pew, at the doctor's office, or beside a sleeping spouse. The good news is you can turn it off in under a minute, and turn it right back on if you miss it.
Where to Find the Setting
The control you're looking for lives in a place called Settings. Think of Settings as the fuse box for your phone — it's where you flip switches to change how things work.
- Find the gray icon on your home screen that looks like a little gear. That's Settings. Tap it.
- Scroll down with your finger until you see Sounds & Haptics. Tap it.
- Scroll down again until you find Keyboard Feedback. Tap it.
You'll see a switch next to the word Sound. If the switch is green, the clicking is turned on. If it's gray, it's off.
Flipping the Switch
To turn the clicking off, tap the green switch once. It will slide to the left and turn gray. That's it — the next time you type a text message or an email, your phone will be silent.
If you ever want the clicks back, return to the same spot and tap the switch again. It will slide to the right and turn green.
You may also see a switch labeled Haptic on the same screen. "Haptic" is a fancy word for a tiny vibration you feel under your finger when you tap a key. Some people enjoy it; others find it distracting. You can turn that on or off the same way.
A Tip for Quiet Moments
If you only need silence for a short while — say, during a concert or a funeral — there's an even faster trick. On the right side of your iPhone, near the top, there's a small switch above the volume buttons. Flip it toward the back of the phone, and you'll see a little orange line appear.
That's the silent switch. It mutes the keyboard clicks, ringtones, and notification sounds all at once, without changing any of your settings. Flip it back forward when you want sound again. It's a bit like turning the ringer down on the old kitchen phone before bedtime.
One Thing to Try Today
Pick up your iPhone, open Settings, and find your way to Sounds & Haptics → Keyboard Feedback. Even if you decide to leave the clicking on, you'll have learned where that switch lives — and that's a useful thing to know the next time something on your phone needs adjusting.
