How to Silence Calls From Unknown Numbers on Your iPhone

June 30, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology

The phone that won't stop ringing

Remember when the phone only rang for people you knew? A neighbor checking in, a daughter calling on Sunday, the doctor's office confirming an appointment. You knew, more or less, who was on the other end before you even picked up.

These days, the phone rings and it's a stranger trying to sell you a car warranty you don't need. Then another stranger. Then another. The good news is your iPhone has a setting that quietly hands those calls straight to voicemail — without taking a single ring out of your day. Here's how to turn it on.

What this setting does (and doesn't do)

When you turn on Silence Unknown Callers, your iPhone will only ring for people in three places:

  • Your Contacts (the names and numbers you've saved)
  • People you've recently called yourself
  • Numbers Apple has spotted in your emails or text messages

Everyone else — telemarketers, scammers, robocalls — goes straight to voicemail without ringing. You'll still see the call in your Recents list later, in case it turns out to be someone important. Think of it like the answering machine catching calls while you're out at lunch. Nothing is lost; it's just held aside for you.

One thing to know: if your pharmacy or a new doctor's office calls and their number isn't saved in your phone, they'll go to voicemail too. That's why it helps to save the numbers of folks you actually want to hear from.

How to turn it on

You'll do this just once, and then it stays on. Have your iPhone in hand.

  1. Find the gray Settings icon on your home screen — it looks like a little gear — and tap it.
  2. Scroll down until you see Apps, and tap that. (On older iPhones, look for Phone directly in the list instead.)
  3. Tap Phone.
  4. Scroll down to find Silence Unknown Callers and tap it.
  5. Tap the switch next to Silence Unknown Callers so it turns green.

That's it. Green means on. If you ever want to turn it off, just come back to the same spot and tap the switch again so it goes back to gray.

Checking your voicemail and missed calls

Since silenced calls don't ring, you'll want to peek at your Recents list every day or so, the way you used to check the answering machine when you got home.

Open the green Phone app and tap Recents at the bottom. Any silenced calls will appear there. If one looks like it might be legitimate — say, a local number you don't recognize — you can tap it to call back, or check your voicemail to see if they left a message.

To check voicemail, tap Voicemail at the bottom of the Phone app. You'll see a list of messages you can tap and listen to, like notes left on the kitchen counter.

One thing to do today

Before you turn on this setting, take five minutes to make sure the people you care about are saved in your Contacts. Your children, your grandchildren, your doctor, your pharmacy, your hairdresser, your closest friends. If their number isn't saved, their call will be silenced too.

Open the Phone app, tap Recents, find a number you want to save, tap the small blue i next to it, then tap Create New Contact. Type in their name and tap Done. Now they'll always ring through.
