How to Send Your Current Location in a Text Message on Your iPhone

Remember pulling over at a gas station to phone home and read the street signs out loud? "I'm at the corner of Elm and Third, across from the pharmacy." Then the person on the other end would try to picture where that was on a map spread across the kitchen table.

Your iPhone can do that whole dance in about three taps. If you're running late to lunch, waiting outside a doctor's office, or want your daughter to know exactly where you parked, you can send her a little map that shows precisely where you are — no street names needed.

Sending your location in a text

Here's how to do it. Open the Messages app and start a text with the person you want to send your location to (or open a conversation you already have with them).

Look for their name at the very top of the screen. Tap it. A small menu will appear, and one of the choices is Send My Current Location. Tap that.

That's it. In a moment, a little map appears in your conversation, marked with the exact spot where you're standing. When your friend or family member taps that map on their phone, it opens up bigger, and they can even get driving directions right to you.

What the other person sees

On their end, they'll see a small square map with a red or blue pin. Underneath, it usually shows the address, if one is available.

This works whether they have an iPhone or an Android phone. The map may look a little different on their screen, but they'll be able to see where you are and how to get there.

It's a one-time snapshot. It shows where you were the moment you tapped Send. It does not keep tracking you around town — this is important. If you move, the map doesn't move with you. It's more like mailing a postcard that says "I'm here" than handing someone a leash.

When this comes in handy

A few situations where this is a small miracle:

• You're meeting a grandchild at a big park or shopping center and can't describe where you're sitting.
• Your car broke down and the tow truck driver asks, "Where exactly are you?"
• You went to an unfamiliar restaurant and want your spouse to join you, but the address is a mouthful.
• You want a neighbor to know where you are on a walk, just in case.

A word about permission

The first time you try this, your iPhone may ask if Messages is allowed to know your location. Tap Allow or While Using the App. That just gives Messages permission to look up where you are when you ask it to. It doesn't share your location with anyone else, and you can change your mind later in Settings.

Try it today

Pick someone safe to practice with — a spouse, a child, a close friend. Send a text that says "Testing something!" and then send your current location right after. Ask them to tell you what they see.

Once you've done it once, you'll always have it in your back pocket for the day you really need it.
