How to Send One Photo to One Person in a Text Message on Your iPhone

June 20, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology

A Quick Snapshot, Sent Like a Postcard

Remember dropping a single photo in the mail to a friend — maybe a picture of the grandkids, scribbled with a note on the back? Sending a photo by text message works much the same way. You pick the picture, choose who gets it, and off it goes.

Today, let's walk through doing exactly that on an iPhone — one photo, one person. Nothing more.

Step by Step

Here's the whole process, start to finish:

  1. Tap the green Messages app on your home screen. It looks like a white speech bubble on a green square.
  2. At the top right, tap the small square with a pencil in it. This starts a new message.
  3. In the "To:" line, type the name of the person you want to send the photo to. As you type, their name should pop up — tap it.
  4. Now look just to the left of the box where you'd type a message. You'll see a small plus sign (+). Tap it.
  5. A menu appears. Tap Photos.
  6. Your recent pictures will slide up onto the screen. Scroll through and tap the one you want. A blue checkmark will appear on it.
  7. The photo now sits in your message box, ready to go. Tap the green arrow pointing up (it's just to the right of the photo) to send it.

That's it. The photo travels to your friend or family member in seconds, and they can save it, reply, or send one back.

A Couple of Helpful Notes

If you don't see a plus sign, you may have an older version of the iPhone software. In that case, look for a small camera icon or a photo icon (a little mountain shape) right next to where you type. Tap that instead — it does the same job.

Be sure you've picked only one photo. If you accidentally tap a second one, you'll see two blue checkmarks. Just tap the extra photo again to un-select it before you hit send.

And one thing worth knowing: once you send a photo by text, you can't take it back. So take a moment before sending to make sure it's the right picture going to the right person — just like you'd check the address on an envelope before dropping it in the mailbox.

How to Know It Went Through

After you tap the green arrow, your photo will appear in a blue or green bubble on the right side of the screen. Underneath, you may see the word Delivered in small gray letters. That means it arrived on the other person's phone.

If you see a red exclamation mark instead, something went wrong — usually a weak internet or cell signal. Tap the exclamation mark and choose Try Again.

Try It Today

Pick one photo you've taken recently — maybe a flower from your garden, your lunch, or a snapshot of the dog napping in the sun. Send it to one person who'd enjoy seeing it. A grandchild, a neighbor, an old friend.

It's a small thing, but it's the modern version of slipping a photo into an envelope. And the smile on the other end is just as real.
