How to Send a Quick Thumbs-Up Reply to a Text Message on Your iPhone

When "OK" is all you need to say
You get a text from your daughter: "Picking up the grandkids at 3, be there around 4:30." You want to let her know you got it, but typing out "Sounds good, see you then!" feels like a lot for a small message.
There's a shortcut built right into your iPhone. It's called a Tapback, and it lets you stick a little thumbs-up (or a heart, or a question mark) right onto her message — no typing required. Think of it like a nod across the kitchen table when someone tells you dinner's almost ready.
How to do it
Open the Messages app and find the conversation. Then:
- Find the message you want to respond to — the gray bubble from the other person.
- Press and hold your finger on that bubble for about a second.
- A small row of six symbols will pop up above the message: a heart, a thumbs-up, a thumbs-down, "Ha ha," two exclamation points, and a question mark.
- Tap the one you want. A thumbs-up is the most common — it simply means "got it."
That's it. The symbol you picked will attach itself to the corner of her message, and she'll see it on her end. She'll know you read what she said and you're on board.
What each symbol means
You don't have to memorize these, but here's a quick guide so you can pick the right one:
- Heart — "I love this" or "so sweet."
- Thumbs-up — "Yes," "okay," or "got it."
- Thumbs-down — "No" or "I don't like that." (Use sparingly — it can feel blunt.)
- Ha ha — "That's funny."
- !! — "Wow!" or "That's exciting."
- ? — "I don't understand" or "Really?"
If you change your mind, press and hold the message again and tap the same symbol to remove it, or pick a different one.
A small word of caution
Tapbacks work beautifully when the other person also has an iPhone. If they have a different kind of phone — an Android, for example — older versions of those phones used to receive your thumbs-up as a text that read "Liked 'Picking up the grandkids at 3...'" which could be confusing. Most phones handle it properly now, but if you're texting someone and they seem puzzled, that may be why. When in doubt, just type "OK" instead.
Try it today
Next time someone texts you something that just needs a quick acknowledgment — a confirmation, a reminder, a photo of the dog — press and hold their message and tap the thumbs-up. You've just replied without typing a single letter.
It's a small thing, but over the course of a week it saves a surprising amount of fumbling with the keyboard. And your family will know you saw their message right away.
