How to See the Exact Battery Percentage on Your iPhone

Remember the little fuel gauge on the dashboard of an old car? You'd glance down, see the needle hovering somewhere between E and F, and try to guess how many miles you had left. It worked, but wouldn't a real number have been nicer?

Your iPhone has that same kind of gauge — a small battery symbol in the top-right corner. It gives you a rough idea, but it doesn't tell you exactly how much juice is left. The good news is that you can turn on a number that shows the precise percentage, so there's no more guessing.

Where to find the setting

Here's how to turn it on. You only have to do this once, and then it stays on for good.

1. On your Home screen, find the app called Settings. It looks like a gray gear.
2. Tap Settings to open it.
3. Scroll down until you see Battery. Tap it.
4. You'll see a switch labeled Battery Percentage. Tap the switch so it turns green.

That's the whole job. Now go back to your Home screen and glance up at the battery symbol in the top-right corner. You should see a number inside it — something like 82 or 47 — telling you exactly how much power is left.

What the number is telling you

Think of the percentage like the money left in a checking account. 100 means the battery is completely full. 0 means it's empty and the phone will shut off.

Most people plug their phone in to charge when the number drops to around 20. That gives you plenty of warning without having to rush. If you see the number turn red, that's the phone's way of saying, "I'm getting low — find a charger soon."

A quick note if you don't see the switch

On some older iPhones, the percentage shows up in a slightly different spot — you may need to swipe down from the very top-right corner of the screen to peek at it. That swipe opens something called the Control Center, which is a little dashboard of shortcuts. The percentage appears up there next to the battery symbol.

But on most iPhones made in the last few years, the switch under Settings → Battery is all you need. Turn it on and the number lives right on your screen from now on.

Why it's worth doing today

Knowing the exact percentage takes the mystery out of your day. You'll know at a glance whether you can head out to lunch without the charger, or whether you should top the phone up before you leave the house. It's the difference between "I think I have enough gas" and "I've got a quarter tank — I'm fine."
