How to Reply to Just One Message in a Busy Text Conversation on Your iPhone

Ever been in the middle of a lively conversation at the dinner table when someone circles back to something said ten minutes ago? "Wait — going back to what Margaret said about the recipe..." It's a handy thing to do. On your iPhone, you can do the very same thing in a text message. It's called a reply, and it links your answer directly to the message you're responding to.

This is especially useful in a group text where messages fly by, or when a friend sends you three questions at once and you only want to answer one.

Why bother with a reply?

Imagine you get a text that says: "Are you free Thursday? And did you find that book I lent you?"

If you just write "Yes," nobody knows which question you're answering. But if you attach your "Yes" directly to the question about Thursday, it's clear as day. Your reply appears right underneath their original message, like a note pinned to a letter.

In a group text with the grandchildren, this keeps things tidy. Everyone can see exactly which message you were responding to, even if twenty other messages have come in since.

How to do it

Open the Messages app and go to the conversation you want. Find the specific message you'd like to reply to — it can be one you just received or one from earlier in the day.

1. Press and hold your finger on the message bubble (the little cloud of text). Hold for about a second, then let go.
2. A small menu will pop up above the message. Tap the word Reply.
3. The screen will darken, and that one message will float in the middle, with a text box underneath.
4. Type your response and tap the blue arrow to send it, just like any other text.

Your reply will appear connected to their original message with a little line, almost like a thread of yarn tying the two together.

A couple of things to know

If you press too lightly or too briefly, nothing happens. Give it a firm, steady press — about the same as pressing a doorbell — and hold until the menu appears.

If the menu shows up but you've changed your mind, just tap anywhere on the empty part of the screen and it will go away. Nothing is sent, nothing is broken.

And if you want to see the original message a reply was linked to, tap the reply itself. The screen will jump right to the message it was answering. Handy when someone replies to something you sent last Tuesday and you can't remember what you said.

The next time you're texting with a family member, wait for them to send you two things in one message — a question and a comment, maybe. Press and hold on just the question, tap Reply, and answer only that part.
