How to Get Back a Photo You Just Deleted on Your iPhone

That sinking feeling

You were tidying up your photos, tapping the little trash can on the blurry ones. Then you realize — one of those was the picture of your granddaughter blowing out her birthday candles. Gone. Or so it seems.

Here's the good news: your iPhone doesn't actually throw a deleted photo away right away. It holds onto it for 30 days, tucked in a folder called "Recently Deleted." Think of it like the wastebasket next to your desk — the paper's in there, but the garbage truck hasn't come yet. You can still reach in and pull it out.

How to find the Recently Deleted folder

Open the Photos app (the one with the colorful flower icon). At the bottom of the screen, tap Albums.

Now scroll down. Past your Favorites, past Selfies, past Screenshots. Near the very bottom, under a heading called "Utilities," you'll see Recently Deleted. Tap it.

Your iPhone may ask you to unlock the folder — either with your face, your fingerprint, or your passcode. This is a safety measure, so nobody browsing your photos can peek at what you tossed. Once it opens, you'll see every photo and video you've deleted in the last 30 days. Each one has a small number on it counting down the days it has left before it's gone for good.

How to bring a photo back

Find the photo you want to rescue and tap it once so it fills the screen.

At the bottom right, you'll see the word Recover. Tap it. Your iPhone will ask, "Are you sure?" — tap Recover Photo to confirm. That's it. The picture goes right back where it belongs, in your main photo library, as if nothing ever happened.

If you want to bring back several at once, tap Select at the top right of the Recently Deleted folder, then tap each photo you want to keep. Tap Recover at the bottom, and they'll all come home together.

A note about the 30-day clock

After 30 days, the iPhone empties the folder on its own — like the garbage truck finally coming by. Once a photo is gone from Recently Deleted, it really is gone.

So if you notice a missing photo, don't wait. Go check that folder today. And when you're doing your regular photo tidying, it's not a bad habit to peek in there before too much time passes, just to make sure nothing precious slipped in by mistake.

One thing to try today

Open your Photos app, tap Albums, and scroll down to Recently Deleted. Just have a look inside. You might be surprised what's waiting there — a photo of an old friend, a receipt you meant to keep, a picture of your car in the parking lot so you'd remember where you parked. If anything catches your eye, tap it and hit Recover. It'll be back in your library in a heartbeat.
