How to Find a Photo You Took Last Week on Your iPhone

June 22, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology

Remember flipping through a shoebox of photographs to find that one picture from last Thanksgiving? You'd dig past birthdays, summer trips, and grandkids in Halloween costumes until — there it was. Your iPhone works a bit like that shoebox, except it's already sorted everything by date for you. Once you know where to look, finding a picture from last week takes about ten seconds.

Open the Photos App

On your home screen, find the app called Photos. Its icon looks like a little colorful pinwheel or flower. Tap it once.

When it opens, you'll see rows and rows of tiny pictures — every photo your phone has ever taken. The newest ones are at the bottom. If you've taken pictures recently, they'll be right there waiting for you.

Scroll Down to the Newest Photos

Put your finger on the screen and gently drag upward. The photos will scroll, and you'll see the most recent ones near the bottom. If you're not already at the bottom, look for a button at the lower right that says All Photos or for a small arrow — tapping it jumps you straight to the latest pictures.

Near the top of each group, you'll see a date — something like "October 15" or "Last Week." That's your shoebox label. Photos from last Tuesday will be grouped under last Tuesday.

Tap the Photo to See It Full-Size

Once you spot the picture you want, tap it. It will fill the whole screen. From there, you can:

  • Pinch two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in for a closer look.
  • Swipe left or right with one finger to see the photo taken just before or just after.
  • Tap the back arrow at the top left to return to the full collection.

That's really all there is to finding a recent photo. Most days, this is the only method you'll need.

A Faster Way: Search by What's in the Picture

Here's something that might surprise you. Your iPhone can actually recognize what's in your photos — flowers, dogs, cars, even cakes. It's a bit like having a librarian who's already looked through every picture and made notes.

Look at the bottom of the Photos app for a magnifying glass icon labeled Search. Tap it. Then type a word into the search bar — try dog, or beach, or the name of a city like Boston. Your phone will show you every photo it thinks matches.

You can even search for a person's name, if you've told your phone who they are. But for now, simple words work wonderfully. Try typing cake and see what comes up.

When You Can't Remember the Date

Sometimes you'll think, "I know I took it sometime last week, but was it Monday or Thursday?" Don't worry about pinpointing the day. Just scroll slowly through the last week's worth of photos — it's usually only a few dozen pictures, and your eye will catch the one you want.

If you took a lot of photos at once (say, at a grandchild's recital), they'll all be grouped together. Tap any one of them, then swipe sideways to flip through the rest, just like flipping through prints at the drugstore counter.

Try This Today

Open the Photos app right now and find the very last picture you took. Tap it. Then tap the back arrow to return. That's the whole skill — and once you've done it once, you've done it for good.
