How to Close an App That's Frozen on Your iPhone
August 27, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology
You know that moment when the television used to get stuck on one channel, and a firm tap on the side would set it right? Every so often, an app on your iPhone gets stuck the same way. The screen won't respond, the little wheel spins forever, or a button just refuses to do anything.
The good news is there's a simple fix. You don't need to restart the whole phone. You just need to close the one app that's misbehaving and open it again fresh.
What "closing an app" really means
When you press the button at the bottom of your iPhone — or swipe up from the bottom edge on newer phones — the app disappears from the screen. But it's not really gone. It's more like closing a book and leaving it on the coffee table with your finger holding the page. The app is still there in the background, ready to pick up where you left off.
Most of the time, that's helpful. But when an app is frozen, we want to shut the book completely and put it back on the shelf. That way, when we open it again, it starts fresh.
The steps to close a frozen app
First, get to the screen that shows all your open apps — this is called the App Switcher. How you get there depends on your iPhone:
- If your iPhone has a round Home button at the bottom: Press that button twice, quickly. A double-tap, like knocking on a door.
- If your iPhone has no Home button: Place your finger at the very bottom edge of the screen, swipe up about an inch, and pause. Don't flick — a slow, deliberate swipe.
Either way, you'll see your open apps lined up like index cards, one behind the other. You can slide them left and right with your finger to look through them.
Find the app that's frozen. Then place your finger on that card and swipe it up and off the top of the screen. That's it. The card is gone, and the app is fully closed.
To get back to your regular home screen, tap anywhere in the empty space, or press the Home button once.
Opening the app again
Now find the app's icon on your home screen and tap it, the same way you always do. It will open fresh, from the beginning, and — nine times out of ten — the trouble is gone.
If the app freezes again right away, that's a sign there may be an update waiting for it, or the app itself is having a bad day. Try again in an hour or so, and it will usually behave.
One thing worth knowing
You don't need to close apps regularly. Some folks were told years ago that closing every app saves battery, but that turned out to be a bit of a tall tale. The iPhone handles background apps on its own quite well. Only close an app when it's actually stuck.
Think of it like the pilot light on a gas stove — you don't blow it out after every meal. You only fuss with it when something's wrong.
Try it today
Next time you have a spare minute, practice getting to the App Switcher — the screen with all the app cards. Double-tap the Home button, or do that slow swipe up from the bottom. Slide through the cards, then tap in the empty space to go back. Once your fingers know the motion, you'll have it ready the next time an app decides to take a nap on you.
