How to Check How Much Storage Space Is Left on Your iPhone
August 21, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology
Remember filling up a filing cabinet? At some point, you couldn't squeeze another folder in without pulling something out. Your iPhone works much the same way. It has a set amount of room inside for photos, apps, and messages — and when it's full, you'll start seeing warnings, or your camera might refuse to take another picture.
The good news: checking how much space you have left takes about thirty seconds.
Where to Look
Your iPhone keeps this information tucked away in a place called Settings. Settings is the app with a gray gear icon — it looks a bit like the inside of a wristwatch. You'll usually find it on your first home screen.
Here's the path to follow:
- Tap the Settings icon (the gray gear).
- Scroll down and tap General.
- Tap iPhone Storage.
That's it. Give it a moment to load — it sometimes takes a few seconds to add everything up.
What You'll See
At the top of the screen, you'll see a colored bar, a bit like the fuel gauge on your car. On the left it says how much space you've used. On the right, or just below, it shows the total amount your phone can hold.
For example, it might read "82 GB of 128 GB Used." GB stands for gigabyte — think of it as the size of the filing cabinet. A 128 GB phone is a fairly large cabinet. If you've used 82 of those 128, you've got 46 left. Plenty of room.
Below that bar, you'll see a list of your apps, sorted by which ones are taking up the most space. Photos and videos are usually the biggest — no surprise there. Videos, in particular, gobble up room the way a Sunday newspaper fills up a recycling bin.
When to Worry, and When Not To
If your bar shows you've got several gigabytes free, you're in fine shape. Don't feel you need to clean anything out.
If it's showing less than one gigabyte free, or if your phone has been warning you that storage is full, that's the time to act. The easiest first step is to look at the app list and see what's using the most space. Tapping any app on that list shows you what's inside and often offers a button to free up room without losing anything important.
One common culprit: old text message conversations with lots of photos and videos. Another: podcasts or shows you downloaded months ago and forgot about.
One Thing to Try Today
Take thirty seconds right now to open Settings, tap General, and tap iPhone Storage. Just look at the number. Write it down on a scrap of paper if you like — the amount used and the total.
Now you know. If someone ever tells you your phone is "running out of space," you'll know exactly whether they're right. And if a warning pops up in the future, you'll know right where to go to see what's going on.
