How to Block a Phone Number on Your iPhone After an Unwanted Call

June 18, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology

When the Same Number Keeps Calling

You answer the phone, and it's someone trying to sell you a car warranty. You hang up. An hour later, the same number calls again. By dinnertime, they've called four times.

There's a way to make sure that particular number never rings your phone again. It takes about ten seconds, and once it's done, it's done. The caller won't know they've been blocked — their calls simply won't reach you.

Finding the Call in Your Recents List

Your iPhone keeps a list of every call you've received, like a logbook by the telephone. To find it, tap the green Phone icon on your home screen — the one that looks like an old-fashioned handset.

At the bottom of the screen, you'll see a row of small words: Favorites, Recents, Contacts, Keypad, Voicemail. Tap Recents.

You'll see a list of recent calls, with the most recent at the top. The unwanted number will be there, probably with a red label that says "Missed" or just the phone number itself.

Blocking the Number

Next to each number in the list, on the right side, you'll see a small letter i inside a circle. That stands for "information." Tap it.

A new screen opens with details about that call. Scroll down — swipe your finger upward on the screen to move the page up — until you see the words Block this Caller in red. Tap it.

Your phone will ask you to confirm by tapping Block Contact. Tap that, and you're finished. That number can no longer ring your phone, leave you a voicemail, or send you a text message.

What Happens Next

From the caller's side, nothing looks different. Their call goes straight to your voicemail, or simply doesn't connect. They have no way of knowing you've blocked them, which is exactly how it should be.

On your end, your phone stays quiet. No ringing, no notification, no missed-call alert from that number. It's a bit like telling the post office to stop delivering mail from one particular sender — except it's instant, and free.

If you ever change your mind — say, you blocked a number by accident — you can undo it. Open the Settings app (the gray gear icon on your home screen), scroll down and tap Phone, then tap Blocked Contacts. You'll see every number you've ever blocked. Swipe your finger from right to left across any name or number, and a red Unblock button appears. Tap it, and that caller can reach you again.

A Word About Scammers

Blocking works wonderfully for one persistent caller. But scammers often use a trick called "spoofing" — they make a different fake number appear each time they call. So if you block one telemarketer number and a similar call comes from a slightly different number the next day, that's likely the same outfit using a new disguise.

You can keep blocking them as they come in. Or, for the really persistent ones, your iPhone has a separate setting that silences all calls from numbers not in your contacts list. That's a bigger decision for another day.

Try It Today

Open your Phone app, tap Recents, and look through the list. If there's even one number you never want to hear from again — a robocaller, a wrong number who keeps trying, a pushy salesperson — tap the small i next to it, scroll down, and tap Block this Caller.

One less interruption at dinnertime is worth ten seconds of your afternoon.
