How to Add Your Doctor's Phone Number to Your iPhone Contacts
June 16, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology
Remember the little address book you kept by the kitchen phone? The one with smudged ink, crossed-out entries, and a coffee ring on the cover? Your iPhone has one of those too. It's called Contacts, and once your doctor's office is in there, calling them takes one tap instead of digging through a drawer for that appointment card.
Let's add your doctor today. It takes about two minutes.
Finding the Contacts App
On your iPhone, look for a gray icon with a little silhouette of a person's head inside a brown rectangle. It's labeled "Contacts."
If you can't spot it on your screen, here's a quick trick: swipe down with one finger from the middle of your home screen. A search bar will appear at the top. Type "Contacts" and tap the app when it shows up.
Tap the app to open it. You'll see a list of any names already saved — family, friends, maybe your hairdresser.
Adding Your Doctor
In the top-right corner, you'll see a plus sign (+). Tap it. A blank card opens up, ready for you to fill in.
Here's what to type:
- First name: Your doctor's first name, or just "Dr."
- Last name: Your doctor's last name
- Company: The name of the practice or clinic (this is helpful if you forget the doctor's name but remember the office)
Now tap where it says "add phone." A number pad appears. Type the office phone number — no dashes needed, the phone adds those for you. Above the number, you'll see a little label that says "home" or "mobile." Tap it and choose "work" instead, since this is an office number.
When you're finished, tap Done in the top-right corner. That's it. Your doctor is saved.
Calling Them With One Tap
Now for the payoff. Anytime you need to call the office, open Contacts, find your doctor's name, and tap it. You'll see the phone number in blue. Tap the number, and your phone dials it for you. No squinting at a business card. No searching the kitchen counter.
You can also ask Siri. Press and hold the side button on your phone and say, "Call Dr. Johnson." Siri will dial it right up.
A Little Extra That Helps a Lot
While you're in there, consider adding a note to the contact card. Scroll down on the doctor's contact and tap "add notes." You can type things like:
- Office hours
- The address (helpful for appointments)
- Your patient ID number
- The name of the receptionist who's always so kind
These notes stay private on your phone, just for you. Think of it like the margin notes you'd scribble next to a name in your old address book.
One Thing to Do Today
Pull out your wallet or that stack of appointment cards on the fridge. Pick one — your primary doctor is a good place to start — and add it to your Contacts using the steps above.
Once you've done one, the next one will feel familiar. Before long, your pharmacy, your dentist, and your eye doctor will all be a single tap away.
