How to Find a Lost iPhone Using the Find My App

October 25, 2026 · by Porchswing Technology

Losing track of your iPhone is one of those moments that can make your heart jump — especially if it slipped between couch cushions, got left at the pharmacy, or simply isn't where you set it down. Before you panic, there's good news: if Find My has ever been turned on for your iPhone, you can usually locate it, make it play a sound, or lock it from a computer, tablet, or a family member's phone.

This guide walks through how to find a lost iPhone using Apple's Find My feature, what to do if the phone is nearby versus far away, and the steps to take if you still can't find it.

Before you start: Find My has to already be turned on

Find My only works if it was switched on before your iPhone went missing. If you're not sure whether it is, it's worth checking right now, while your phone is in hand, so you're ready if this ever happens:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap Find My.
  4. Make sure Find My iPhone shows as turned on.

If it's already on, you're set. If you can't check because the phone is the one that's missing, skip ahead — you may still be able to locate it if it was turned on previously.

How to find a lost iPhone using another device

If you have a computer, iPad, or a trusted family member's Apple device nearby, this is the fastest way to locate your phone.

  1. On another Apple device, open the Find My app. If you're using a web browser instead, go to iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID.
  2. Tap or click the Devices tab.
  3. Choose your iPhone from the list.

You'll see one of two things on the map:

  • A live location, if your iPhone is online. This means it's turned on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  • A last known location, if your iPhone is turned off, out of battery, or offline. This is where it was the last time it had a connection.

If your iPhone is nearby: play a sound

If the map shows your phone is close — maybe in another room, your car, or a jacket pocket — you can make it play a sound, even if the ringer is turned off or the phone is on silent.

  1. In the Find My app or on iCloud.com, select your iPhone.
  2. Tap Play Sound.

Follow the sound through your home or car to track it down.

If your iPhone is far away or you think it's lost for good

When the map shows your phone somewhere you don't recognize, or you're worried it was picked up by someone else, you can protect your information without needing the phone back in hand yet.

  1. Select your iPhone in Find My or at iCloud.com.
  2. Choose Mark As Lost (sometimes shown as Lost Mode).
  3. Follow the prompts to lock the phone and add a message with a phone number where you can be reached, in case someone finds it and wants to return it.

Marking a phone as lost locks it with your passcode and keeps your information private while it's out of your hands. If you later decide the phone truly isn't coming back, Find My also offers an option to erase it remotely, which removes your personal data. That step can't be undone, so it's worth being confident the phone is truly gone before you use it.

If you don't have another Apple device handy

You're not stuck if you're out and about with no other Apple device on you. A trusted family member or friend can open the Find My app on their own iPhone, go to the Me tab, and use the Help a Friend option. You sign in there with your own Apple ID, and it works the same as using your own device.

What to do if you're stuck

If your iPhone doesn't show up in Find My at all, Find My may not have been turned on before it went missing, which means it can't be located remotely. If that's the case, the next step is to contact your cell carrier to suspend service on the line, so no one else can use it, and consider filing a report with local police if you believe it was taken rather than lost.

If you're not sure how to check your settings or want someone to walk through your phone's safety settings with you so you're prepared ahead of time, that's exactly the kind of thing Porchswing's technology classes cover in plain English, at a pace that makes sense. Common questions

Does Find My cost extra?

No. Find My is a free feature built into every iPhone through your Apple ID — there's nothing extra to buy or subscribe to.

Can I use Find My if my iPhone's battery is dead?

You can still see its last known location from before the battery died, but you won't get a live, moving location once it's powered off.

Will Find My work if the phone is turned off on purpose, like by someone who took it?

Find My can still show the last location it had before it went offline, and some newer iPhones can be located for a short time even after power off, using Bluetooth. It isn't guaranteed, which is why marking the phone as lost right away is worth doing even if you don't see a live location.
