How to Turn Your iPhone Into a Magnifying Glass for Small Print

Remember keeping a magnifying glass in the kitchen drawer for reading the fine print on prescription bottles? Or pulling one out at the restaurant when the menu lighting just wasn't quite right?

Your iPhone has one built in. It's called the Magnifier, and once you know it's there, you'll reach for it all the time — for medicine labels, thermostat dials, the serial number on the back of an appliance, or the date stamped on a can of soup.

Finding the Magnifier

The Magnifier is already on your iPhone — you don't need to buy or download anything.

The easiest way to open it is to swipe down from the middle of your home screen. A search bar appears at the top. Type the word **Magnifier**, then tap the result. The app opens, and your camera turns into a magnifying lens.

You'll see whatever the camera is pointed at, but larger. Hold the phone a few inches above the small print you want to read, just like you'd hold a magnifying glass.

Making It Bigger and Clearer

At the bottom of the screen, you'll see a slider — a line with a small circle on it. Drag the circle to the right to zoom in closer. Drag it to the left to zoom out. Move it slowly until the text is the size you want.

If the print is in a dark spot — say, the back of your radio or a label inside a cabinet — tap the **flashlight icon** (it looks like a little lit-up bulb). The phone's light turns on so you can see clearly.

There's also a button that looks like a camera shutter, a round circle near the bottom. Tap it once and the image freezes in place. That way, you don't have to keep holding the phone perfectly still while you read. To go back to the live view, tap it again.

Keeping It Close at Hand

Searching for the Magnifier every time works fine, but here's a nicer trick: put it right on your home screen so it's one tap away, just like the Phone or Messages app.

Swipe down from the middle of the home screen and type **Magnifier** again. When the icon appears, press and hold your finger on it. A small menu pops up. Tap **Add to Home Screen**. Now the Magnifier sits with your other apps, ready whenever you need it.

You can move it next to the Phone app or wherever feels most natural. Press and hold the icon, choose **Edit Home Screen**, then drag it to the spot you want.

A Few Real-Life Uses

Once you've got it handy, you'll find moments for it almost every day:

- The dosage instructions on a new prescription - The expiration date on a yogurt container - The model number on the back of your TV when you call for help - A handwritten note where the ink has faded - The tiny screws on your eyeglasses

It works in color, too, which a regular magnifying glass can't quite match — handy for telling navy blue from black socks in the morning.
