How to Share Your Location with a Family Member on Your iPhone

A Modern Way to Say "I Got There Safe"

Remember calling home from a payphone to let your mother know you'd arrived? A quick ring, two words, and she could rest easy. Your iPhone can do something similar — only better. It can quietly let a trusted family member see where you are, without you having to call at all.

This is handy if you're driving to a doctor's appointment, traveling to visit a grandchild, or just want your daughter to know you made it home from the grocery store. You set it up once, and it works on its own.

What "Sharing Your Location" Really Means

When you share your location, you're giving one specific person — and only that person — permission to see a small dot on a map showing where your phone is. They see it in their own Maps app or in an app called Find My.

Think of it like leaving a spare house key with a trusted neighbor. They have it, but they only use it when it matters. You can take the key back any time you want.

A few things worth knowing:

- Only the people you choose can see your location. Not Apple, not strangers. - You can stop sharing at any moment, with two taps. - The other person needs an iPhone, iPad, or Mac for this to work.

How to Turn It On

Here's the step-by-step. Take your time — there's no rush.

1. Open the app called **Find My**. It has a green icon with a small radar circle. If you can't spot it, swipe down on the middle of your home screen and type "Find My" in the search bar at the top. 2. At the bottom of the screen, tap **People**. 3. Tap **Share My Location** (or the blue **+** button, then "Share My Location"). 4. Type the name or phone number of the family member you want to share with. If they're already in your contacts, their name will pop up — tap it. 5. Tap **Send** in the top right corner. 6. A small window will ask how long to share: **For One Hour**, **Until End of Day**, or **Share Indefinitely**. Tap the one that fits.

That's it. Your family member will get a message saying you've shared your location, and they may be asked to share theirs back with you. They can say yes or no — it's their choice.

How to Stop Sharing

This is just as important as starting. You're always in charge.

1. Open **Find My** again. 2. Tap **People** at the bottom. 3. Tap the name of the person you're sharing with. 4. Scroll down and tap **Stop Sharing My Location**.

Done. They won't get an alarm or notification — the dot simply disappears from their map. It's like quietly taking the spare key back.

A Gentle Word About Battery

Sharing your location uses a little extra battery throughout the day — not much, but some. If you only need it for a trip, choose **For One Hour** or **Until End of Day** instead of **Share Indefinitely**. Your phone will thank you.

One Thing to Try Today

Pick one person — a son, daughter, or close friend with an iPhone. Set up location sharing with them using the steps above, and choose **Until End of Day** so you can see how it feels. Give them a call afterward and ask, "Can you see where I am?" If they can, you've done it perfectly. And tomorrow, you can decide whether to keep it on or turn it off.
