How to See the Exact Time a Text Message Was Sent on Your iPhone

You're reading through a string of text messages with your daughter, trying to remember when she said she'd come by for lunch. The messages are all there in a tidy column, but there are no times next to most of them. Was that "I'll be there at noon" sent this morning, or yesterday afternoon?
There's a hidden trick on the iPhone that shows you the exact time each message was sent. It's been there all along — Apple just tucked it out of the way to keep the screen tidy.
Why the Times Are Hidden
If you scroll through a text conversation, you'll notice a date and time stamp every so often — usually at the top of a new day, or after a long gap between messages. In between, the times disappear.
This is meant to keep things looking clean, the way a handwritten letter doesn't put the time of day next to every sentence. But it can leave you guessing about a message that came in the middle of a busy afternoon.
The Swipe Trick
Here's how to peek at the times whenever you want:
1. Open the Messages app and tap on the conversation you want to look at. 2. Place your finger on any message bubble. 3. Without lifting your finger, slide it gently to the **left**.
As you slide, the whole column of messages shifts to the left, and the times appear on the right-hand side — one next to every single message. Let go, and everything slides back into place. No harm done, nothing changed.
That's the whole trick. It works on messages you sent and messages you received, in any conversation.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
The time you see is when the message was sent, not necessarily when you read it. So if your son sent "Running late!" at 5:47 p.m. and you didn't see it until 6:30, the trick will show 5:47.
If you swipe and only see the date (like "Tuesday") instead of a clock time, that means the message is from a previous day. Swipe on a message from today and you'll see the hour and minute.
This same swipe works in group texts, too. Handy when you're trying to figure out who chimed in first.
Try It Today
Open up a recent conversation — maybe with a grandchild or a good friend — and give it a slow swipe to the left. Once you've seen the times appear, you'll never wonder again whether that "On my way" was from ten minutes ago or two hours back.
