How to Save a Phone Number from a Recent Call on Your iPhone

The little book by the phone
Many of us remember the address book that lived next to the kitchen phone. When someone new called, you'd jot down their number on the nearest scrap of paper, then later — if you remembered — copy it into the book in pen.
Your iPhone has its own address book built right in. It's called Contacts. And the nice thing is, when someone calls you, you don't have to write the number down at all. The phone already has it. You just need to tell it, "Save this one."
Here's how to do exactly that, step by step.
Finding the call you want to save
Pick up your iPhone and tap the green icon that looks like an old telephone receiver. It's called the Phone app, and it's usually at the bottom of your screen.
Along the bottom of the Phone app, you'll see a row of small words: Favorites, Recents, Contacts, Keypad, Voicemail. Tap **Recents**. This shows you every call from the last little while — incoming, outgoing, and missed. Missed calls show up in red.
Find the call you want to save. Maybe it's the plumber who finally called back, or your new neighbor, or the pharmacy.
Saving the number
To the right of each call, you'll see a small letter "i" inside a circle. Tap that "i." (Tapping the name or number itself will call them back — not what you want right now.)
A new screen opens with details about the call. Near the top, you'll see two choices:
- **Create New Contact** — use this if the person isn't in your phone yet. - **Add to Existing Contact** — use this if you already have them saved but want to add a second number (say, their cell phone in addition to their home phone).
Tap **Create New Contact**. A blank form appears with the phone number already filled in. All you have to do is type their first name and last name in the boxes at the top. You can stop there if you like.
When you're done, tap **Done** in the top-right corner. That's it. The number is saved.
What you've gained
The next time that person calls, their name will appear on your screen instead of an unfamiliar number. That alone is worth the effort — you'll know whether to pick up.
It also means you can call them back without hunting for the number. Just tap Contacts, scroll to their name, and tap. No more squinting at a sticky note on the fridge.
And if you ever get a new phone, your contacts come with you, as long as you sign in with the same Apple account. Think of it as an address book that can't get lost behind the couch.
One thing to try today
Open your Phone app and tap **Recents**. Look for one call from someone you'd like to save — maybe your doctor's office, a grandchild, or a friend who called last week. Tap the little "i" next to their number, then **Create New Contact**, type their name, and tap **Done**.
One number saved today. Tomorrow, another. Before long, your phone will greet every familiar caller by name.
