How to Get Back a Photo You Accidentally Deleted on Your iPhone

You're flipping through photos on your phone, your thumb brushes the wrong spot, and — poof — that picture of your granddaughter at her piano recital seems to be gone. Your stomach drops the same way it did when you used to accidentally tear a Polaroid.

Here's the good news: on an iPhone, a deleted photo isn't really gone right away. It sits in a kind of waiting room for 30 days, in case you want it back. Let me show you how to find it.

The "Recently Deleted" Album

Think of this like the wastebasket next to your desk. When you crumple up a piece of paper and toss it in, you can still reach in and pull it out — as long as the trash hasn't been taken out yet. Your iPhone has the same idea built in.

Here's how to open it:

1. Tap the **Photos** app (the colorful pinwheel icon). 2. At the bottom of the screen, tap **Albums**. 3. Scroll down until you see a section called **Utilities**. 4. Tap **Recently Deleted**.

You may be asked to use your fingerprint, your face, or your passcode to open it. That's a safety lock — Apple wants to make sure only you can see what was deleted. Go ahead and unlock it.

Bringing the Photo Back

Once you're inside Recently Deleted, you'll see every photo and video you've deleted in the last 30 days. Each one has a small number on it counting down the days until it disappears for good.

To rescue a photo:

1. Tap the photo you want back. 2. At the bottom right, tap **Recover**. 3. A little message will pop up asking if you're sure. Tap **Recover Photo**.

That's it. The photo hops right back into your main collection, in the same spot it lived before — same date, same place. It's as if nothing ever happened.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

If it's been more than 30 days since you deleted the photo, it's truly gone. The waiting room empties itself out automatically, so don't put off checking.

If you want to recover several photos at once, tap **Select** in the top right corner of the Recently Deleted album, then tap each photo you want back. When you've picked them all, tap **Recover** at the bottom.

And one more comforting thought: just opening the Recently Deleted album doesn't change anything. You can browse around, look at what's in there, and back out without touching a thing. Nothing will be deleted or recovered unless you tap a button that says so.

Try It Today

Even if you haven't lost a photo, it's worth taking the tour now, while there's no pressure. Open the Photos app, tap Albums, scroll to Utilities, and peek inside Recently Deleted. You might be surprised what's in there — a blurry shot, a picture of your shoe, maybe something you actually meant to keep.

Knowing where this album lives is like knowing where you keep the spare house key. You may not need it often, but when you do, you'll be awfully glad you remembered.
